Summary/Abstract: The rise of computer-mediated communication and the Internet more than anything else has reshaped the uses of computers for language learning. With the Internet, the computer in society and the classroom – has been transformed from a tool for information processing into a communication device. For the first time, learners of a language can now communicate inexpensively and quickly with other learners or speakers of the target language all over the world. The aims of CLL is to create technical, organizational and didactic requirements for students of the universities to work together across national boundaries in order to learn more about one another’s culture. Conventional CALL was difficult enough for many teachers. The Web, for all his advantages, can be even harrowing. What do you do when the site around which you have planned your session suddenly disappears? How can you keep your students learning during an IRC [Internet Relay Chat] session? And what is the best way of handling a student who covertly calls up to the other site? All ELT sites are not worthwhile, and the learner, whether in class or studying alone, would be better advised to concentrate on conventional ELT materials.
