The Tropological Realism of Michel Leiris

Summary/Abstract: This introduction to a special edition of „Sulfur” (1986), devoted to Leiris, deals with his life, artistic and intellectual friendships, travels, work methods, autobiographical writings and ethnographic studies. Leiris was one of the most self-centred men of letters who, however, incessantly confronted that which was to be found outside his own person – existence in the social processes of the language and writing.
