Research on linguistic awareness of the inhabitants of rural areas

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the present article is to present the issues related to the examination of linguistic awareness of rural communities. This term is well-established is the relevant literature but this does not mean a uniform con solidated view on linguistic awareness. Hence, various manners of defining this phenomenon are discussed and the most important features of linguistic awareness are characterised in the initial part of the article. The fundamental part of this article concerns the manner of conducting research on this phenomenon among rural communities, which are extremely diverse at present in terms of sociolinguistics. The modern research on linguistic awareness of inhabitants of rural areas consists in analysing the views and opinions on the language of not only the users of a dialect, the number of whom is rapidly decreasing, but also bilingual people or those who use only general Polish.
