Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the issue of towns in the Polish territory which belonged to ecclesiastical institutions in the 16th century. It discusses the matters of ownership, successful and failed foundation initiatives in the 16th century, and conditions influencing (or not) the development and importance of urban centres. The Annex to this paper contains a list of all ecclesiastical towns as of ca. 1600, sorted by the institution they belonged to. Two maps annexed to the paper present, respectively, ecclesiastical property in the entire territory of the Crown at the end of the 16th century and ecclesiastical property in Greater Poland in the same period.
