Summary/Abstract: Is there a moral case in favor ofIntellectual Property (IP) in general and copyrights in particular? Philosophers whowork extensively on this topic tend to advance the idea that there are three main ethicalframeworks that provide an affirmative answer to this question: (i) the Lockean/naturalrights approach, (ii) the utilitarian argument and (iii) the personhood theory. Much inkhas been spilled in order to both advance these ethical arguments in favor of copyrightsbut also for their rebuttals. Leaving aside the orthodox component of this moral debate,I wish to explore and cast doubt on some additional (albeit marginal) philosophicalarguments, some of them resembling either logical or economic fallacies. More precisely,I will analyze (a) what I have labeled the “proxy argument” in favor of copyrights,(b) the “broken window” of copyrights and (c) how some arguments in favor ofintellectual appropriation resemble to a “post hoc ergo propter hoc” logical fallacy.
