Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the attempts of modernising the Polish machine industry in the 1960s. The undertakings of the decision-makers are illustrated through the case of negotiating and signing license contract for the production of new motor vehicle, Fiat 125p, by the FSO. The cooperation with the Italian automobile company Fiat and the production of a car with mid-sized engine was meant to positively influence the structure of the export sector of the machine industry.
