Summary/Abstract: The geographic location of Russia has for centuries been an important factor in itsgeostrategic security. As a result of the development of the economy and, in particular, technologies, after the Second World War, changes in the policy took place, which madethe borders of Russia no longer as safe as it could result from its location. There has beenan increase in the importance of buffer zones, which nowadays take over not so muchthe roles of the theater of warfare, but the zones of struggle for political and economicinfluence. In the 21st century, when wars are on a completely different plane, Russia ismentally in the nineteenth-century ways of international rivalry. The century started, inwhich the global hegemony has been devalued, where the polycentric system of hegemonyarises, and the empires are created not in a territorial but economic sense, should bringRussia a great change. In front of the largest country in the world, there are twopossibilities: either it will cease to pursue its current policy and once again become amajor force on the international arena as the former Russian Empire, or it will bemarginalized not only in the Eurasian part of the world but also in the global sense.
