Summary/Abstract: In the article on the basis of new documents, whichwere unpublished before, the ethnic origin of Nazar Alexandrovich Karazin, the father of the founder of theKharkov Imperial University, Vasily Nazarovich Karazin, is covered. On the basis of the new documents found inthe Russian State Military Historical Archive (RSMHA) from the personal fund of N. A. Karazin, the authors provehis Bulgarian, not Greek, as it was stated earlier, origin.It is Catherine’s Rescript from 1768 and a description ofthe Karazin family tree, about which the authors write in the article and, of course, personal documents of V. N.Karazin’s father – Nazar Alexandrovich, in particular hisso-called “regimental certificate”. Much attention in the article is given to the preparation in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavraof second major, and then of lieutenant colonel NazarKarazin, to a special mission as a personal representativeof Catherine during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774in Moldavia and Wallachia, his negotiations with the ruler of Walachia Pervul Kantakuzino with the aim of raising the uprising in the Slavic provinces of the Ottoman Empire and spreading the “Manifesto” of Catherine in theseprovinces in order to realize the so-called “Greek project”of the Russian Empress.
