Summary/Abstract: .D Sîrburepresents a particular case in the Romanian literature as he has been, for decades, unjustly overlooked by critics and readers alike. The scales have been somewhat adjusted with the publication in 1992 of the first volume of Adio, Europa!, which created quite a stir in the Romanian literary world. The present paper focuses on the main character of the novel, Candid Desiderius, who is an alter ego of the author himself. The question raised by the paper is how representative such a personality is of the Romanian intellectual as presented against the background of a fierce communist regime.
