Summary/Abstract: Miroslav Penkov’s East of the West is a collection of stories which take place in Bulgaria and the United States and deal with the experiences of immigration and deterritorialization. In this paper I study the ways in which Penkov uses language to communicate the immigrant’s experience of miscommunication. While deterritorialization by immigration is a universal subject, in Penkov’s book of stories he deals explicitly with the relationship between east and west and demonstrates, beginning with the title of his book, that these concepts are inherently relative.
