Summary/Abstract: This article is an introductory part to the thesis "The Impact of Image Banks on the Advertising Photography in Bulgaria, which will look at the role of agencies selling stock images on the Bulgarian advertising market and their influence on advertising photography in the period 2000-2017. The purpose of the study is to research the trends in the selection of an advertising photographic image. The focus is on when images from image banks are preferred to custom made ones and vice versa. The survey will present the number of photographs in Bulgarian advertisements taken from an image bank and the amount of custom made ones. Another issues considered are at what stages of the working advertising process stock images appear, what their specifics are and what makes them different from the custom made ones. What is also looked into is whether the stock industry for generating photographic images is detrimental to custom advertising photography and whether it provides additional business opportunity for advertising photographic studios.
