Summary/Abstract: During the Age of Enlightenment, practical interest in astronomy grew. Ever more sophisticated instruments for observation of the sky were developed. This led to increased demand for special buildings dedicated to astronomical observation, buildings designed so as to eliminate external disruptions. Europe witnessed the construction of the first observatories and the Jesuit order played a crucial role in their foundation. Construction of an observatory in Trnava started in 1753 and just three years later, first astronomical observations were carried out there. The observatory served its purpose until 1785. The aim of this contribution is to describe the circumstances surrounding a construction of an astronomical tower in Trnava and its final architectural form. The study is based on specialised contemporary Slovak sources as well as a French travel diary.
