The functions of books and the regional press on the internet. A case study

Summary/Abstract: Regional publications, the media and the press influence local communities, thus performing a number of various tasks apart from the task of transmitting information. Due to the development of the internet, the range of their activities was extended and supplemented with new possibilities, which influenced the functions which were heretofore realised. The article describes the basic purposes of the local media, it also demonstrates the opportunities provided by the space of the internet. It turns out that this space is not necessarily a threat to the traditional forms of the book but an incentive to use them, to engage in discussion, to verify the facts that are provided. Modern solutions positively influence the reception of publications by potential readers. On the basis of general information and the functions which were adduced, one described the portal gazetacodzienna.pl – Śląsk Cieszyński online and a part of the regional-themed books which are promoted by this portal.
