Material in the Study of (Serbian) Literature

Summary/Abstract: The author uses more general definitions of material and its status in the study of literature as a starting point. The motives and summaries from the main paths of European tradition (Prometheus, Antigone, Jove, Tristan and Isolde, Hamlet, etc.) are substituted in Serbian literature with the motives and summaries from national history and/or folk tradition. The status and type of material changes depending on the poetics of literary epochs and directions, as well as the poetics of a certain author. The positivist method in studying literature has given scientific bases in familiarizing with the author, whereas with the so-called antipositivist rebellion the new research fields find material in the intertextual connections. The interchange of sources and types of material are a reliable indicator of the basic foci of literary directions and epochs (enlightenment: sentimentalism, classicism; romanticism, realism, etc.). The author believes that Serbian literary science lacks a systematic processing of this type of its tradition and that material in some types of scientific papers remains an unavoidable field of research.
