Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to provide a new philosophical understanding of Guy de Maupassant’s characters. The well-known characters from Bel-Ami will be approached from the ontic diseases philosophical perspective, highlighted in a precise and unique manner by the Romanian philosopher Constantin Noica. Three key terms will be detailed: the monadological living, the common illness and the ontic disease. The monadological living implies a reflection of everything, everything we do, an experience taken with extreme characters and which makes the characters sick of ontic diseases, thus creating a wide variety of a-typical characters. The disease involves an alteration, of organic or functional nature, often associated with states of spontaneous irritation (envy, bad temper, tunes and so on) whereas the ontic disease is a pathological process that affects the body.
