The Croatian editions of the printing house Karletzky in Rijeka as a source for linguistic research

Summary/Abstract: The printing house Karletzky operated in Rijeka from its establishment in 1779 to the last decade of the 19th century. Under the management of its founder and later his successors, all members of the Czech family Karletzky, during more than one hundred years of its existence, the printing house Karletzky printed in Latin script numerous editions of various types in Latin, Italian, Croatian, Hungarian and German. In addition to editions in aforementioned languages, those printed in Croatian are equally valuable for the research of different aspects of Croatian history, especially of the local – the history of Rijeka. At the same time, with respect to the period of printing, Croatian editions of the printing house Karletzky represent an important corpus for the analysis of the history of the Croatian language and its standardization processes from the end of the 18th century until the end of the 19th century in the northern part of Croatian Adriatic, primarily Chakavian (Čakavian) region. Consequently, this paper discusses Croatian editions of the printing house Karletzky as a source for linguistic research accentuating potential paths in research and linguistic analysis of these editions.
