Summary/Abstract: Man and his intellectual education founded on an exquisite moral basis, or even vice-versa, the moral-man who is extremely well trained, constituted the almost omnipresent theme of Cantemir’s works. Cantemir’s view on man and his ethics are permeated by a Humanistic trend which manifests itself either in the formal framework of anthropology and the Christian morals or, overcoming this framework, in emphasizing man’s dignity as a rational and free being and the role of reason in moral life. This ambivalent approach of man places Cantemir somehow between Humanism and the Enlightenment.
