Summary/Abstract: The "scholar prince" of Romania greatly benefited from the cultural merging of his times. The Greek element, in its several manifestations and its application to a variety of disciplines, extensively contributed to his erudition in the different times that he encountered or experienced it: for example, his contact with the Cretan monk J. Cacavelas, his profound love for the classics, his friendship with A. Mavrokordatos, exponent of the Greek School of Enlightenment, and many other Greeks that frequented the Great School in Constantinople or the diplomatic circles of the Ottoman court. This presentation will focus on the importance of the Hellenic element - classical or other-and its role in the merging of cultures that shaped the personality and inspired the writings of Dimitrie Cantemir.
