Summary/Abstract: Places especially in North America, had practised place promotion for more than a century and even in Europe there was a tradition, especially in tourism centers, of place advertising by local authorities. However political and economic changes occuring in Western Europe at the beginning of the 1970s and in Central Europe at the of the 1980s led an increase in the attention given to a much wider place marketing in Western European cities in the 1980s and Central European cities in the 1990s
