Summary/Abstract: On May 16 th 2006, the EU has once again postponed the setting of the final date for Romania’s and Bulgaria’s entry to the Union. It is probably the first time in EU-history that the entry of a Candidate State will be uncertain up until about three months before the date originally set. Indeed, according to a Christian Democratic Member of European Parliament, the EU will need to “put on the brakes” in its enlargement project 1 . In the case of these two countries, EU officials have cited their failure to speed up reforms to fight crime and corruption 2 . However, the irony is that by postponing enlargement, the EU might actually make these tasks more difficult to achieve, while the future of European security depends to a large extent on the successful integration of Eastern Europe into the Union.
