Summary/Abstract: Until recently forgiveness was considered a Christian virtue, but by the end of the 20th century it became a buzzword in our society. In this process, the Good Friday Agreement of Northern Ireland and the fall of the Apartheid regime in South Africa,as well as the public discussions following these events, played a significant role. The question “How should we deal with the harms of the past?” was answered by Archbishop Desmond Tutu: “No future without forgiveness.” These events have led to a substantial body of psychological research on forgiveness in the areas of social and personality psychology and to a fast-growing number of philosophical works. Simultaneously, forgiveness has become a challenge for Christian ethics. This study presents a Hungarian ethos of forgiveness related to the fall of the communist regime.
