Summary/Abstract: This paper scrutinizes one aspect of the written heritage of Imre (Emeric) Révész, Sr. (1826–1881), the well-known church historian of the Hungarian Reformed Church. Révész has a great reputation because of his fight against the “Habsburg Patent”, i.e. the order of Vienna to obstruct Reformed education in Hungary. He was also an outstanding theologian. His monographies and biographies are appreciated by the general public as well as by the experts of the age. One of his famous books was the Life of Calvin (1864), the first biography of the great Reformer published in Hungarian. This essay reveals the historical, theological, and personal background of the Life of Calvin in the light of Révész’ correspondence.
