Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a sociolinguistic analysis of today’s status of the indigenous idiom of Lowland Scotland internationally known as Scots or Scots language. The major task of the work is to introduce Scots as the regional language of the Lowlands in the context of its social history and literary tradition. The present-day linguistic situation in Scotland is considered within the perspective of the European lesser used languages, which is a topical issue for sociolinguistic studies.
