Summary/Abstract: The concept of the armed people comprises three fundamental features: the mass character, voluntarism, and conscious self-organizing of citizens into an armed force. These were the features of the military force of the third and the fourth estate in France in 1789. The internal organization of the military force, the election of the commanding staff, and the position of the military force in society are all a reflection of the different revolutionary aims and political strategies of the men who lead the revolution. Some problems, such as the unity of the armed force, the relationship between the people’s guard and the regular armed units, the relationship of the armed people towards mass terror and democracy, the citizens’ rights in the armed forces these remain important questions even for today's science and politics.
