Summary/Abstract: International regional integration outside Europe has basically been following the pattern of tax unions and of free trade areas. It has however also been brought about through other interests; in particular as a compensation for the failure of market liberalization and as a form of search for international identity. The economic activity among developing countries has been growing equally to that within the framework of area integration. Data can be generalized only in relative terms and the specific conditions of the national and regional economies of Africa, Asia, Latin America, have to be taken into consideration. The motifs for cooperation and the success of regional integrated groups are specific in each ease. The integration process has a future primarily because it transcends classic commodity exchange and because it stimulates cooperation in production along the lines of a new international production division of labour.
