Summary/Abstract: The article reviews basic spatial reference markers in the narratives about village history. Although differing substantially in its relative acquisition, the important spaces mentioned in such narratives are the home, the neighborhood, the church, the village, the landscape (and mainly the village's arable land), the nation, the Christian world, the humankind, etc. Narrative histories reflect also the attitude to the woods, the desert, the temple, the opposition between the mountains and the plane lands, etc. Re-settlements are viewed as an uttermost measure in extreme situations. Special attention is paid to the tendency followed by village communities to form a well conceptualized settlement space. The author thus advocates the firm integration between the human being and the village community in pre-modern Bulgarian culture, as well as the inseparability of the village, lineal, and national aspects of the chronotope.
