Summary/Abstract: In this text a number of different conceptions of tolerance are disentangled. A failure to distinguish them has meant a serious incompleteness in the arguments of those who have claimed that tolerance is either a liberal or communitarian virtue. The author proceeds to examine whether or not the liberal and communitarian proponents violate the imperative of tolerance, after which he argues that liberals must have a better defence of tolerance if they wish to retain the concept. Drawing on insights from French philosopher Jacques Derrida, a model is developed for a postmodern liberalism which shares an affinity with Rawls’ conception of political liberalism.
