Infrastructure and Society – Theoretical Considerations

Summary/Abstract: This paper represents anattempt to operationalise the broad concept of infrastructure in the field of socialsciences. The endeavour constitutes the subject of a PhD thesis (University of Bucharest)and a recently completed post-doctoral fellowship at the Romanian Academy.We propose a theoretical analysis comprising a typology of infrastructure byform and content, discerning between social infrastructure and material infrastructure,as well as a brief discussion focused on the interdependence of the two. Consequently,we propose a new type of social reality understanding, centred on the novel concept ofsocial infrastructure. Also, the paper contains a discussion concerning the social role ofpersonality, in order to understand the social mechanism and its contribution to thematerial and social infrastructure of a community.
