Summary/Abstract: The concept of modernization of Croatian society demands the modernization of education. The ecologization of education is based upon the objective challenges of global ecological issues, Croatia's European orientation and transitional changes. The external factors are still stronger than the current social motivation for ecologizing society and education. Ecological challenges are cultural challenges to education, and European challenges are part of the corpus of ecological civilizational challenges. If Croatia wishes to keep up with the developmental tendencies of modern western society and be included in it, it has to accept the ecological challenges in education as well. The author does not consider it sufficient to partially "ecologize" the curricula. He deems that an ecological curriculum should be created, but also a comprehensive social project of ecological education - school, professional and permanent education. The author, thus, proposes certain measures for changing the policy of education.
