Summary/Abstract: One of the prime and still not entirely solved problems of the post-Soviet states is that it is not enough for them to proclaim de jure sovereignty; they also have to prove to themselves, their neighbours and the international community that they are de facto capable of being sovereign states. There are certainly plenty of symbols, independence celebrations, national currencies, and customs authorities that take themselves mighty seriously; these are not difficult to achieve. The de facto actions and the deliberate demonstrations of power seriously impact many – however, primarily those who actually lived in some kind of symbiotic relationship with the old Soviet centre of power.[...]
