Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the fate of Swedish social housing policy from its beginning directly after the Second World War to the present stage of radical deregulation. The first part contains a description of the different components of what has been seen as the Swedish model of housing policy. The goal of this policy was not to replace the market but to regulate it in such a way that it would function in the smooth way which the market theory predicts but never seems to achieve. The second part briefly describes the years of rapid expansion of mass housing in general and social housing in particular and this was followed by what was experienced as a crisis by representatives of housing enterprises in the social rental sector.
