Summary/Abstract: The region of Gorski Kotar is situated on the meeting point of the Pannonian, Dinaric, Mediterranean and Alpine cultural areas. The saturation of different influences, as well as the specific spatial characteristics, ongoing migrations of the population and the network of transit roads created a complicated complex of cultural, civilisational and natural elements that can be recognized as a specific regional identity. Regional identification is a inevitable need in times of the creation of a common global world and as a necessity within the process of formation of the concept of national sustainable development. The recognizable identity of Gorski Kotar can be kept and founded by different forms of museum and tourist presentation, that is, by a well-built relationship and co-work of the industry of heritage and the tourist industry. It is thus necessary to look into the possibility of application of certain type of museum that is the best when it comes to recognize the multi-layered identity of a community and, on the other hand, it is necessary to find out which factors of the tourist offer are motivating (attractive factors, communication or traffic factors and receptive factors) for the region to become a destination. A complete, interdisciplinary research of spatial (geographical, historical, bioecological), ethnographic, economic, cultural and other characteristics of the Gorski Kotar region would be a contribution towards the recognition of the specific spatial identity, and the concept of the Gorski Kotar eco-museum as a new form of museum practice of identity preservation would be a contribution towards the preservation, keeping and presentation of the entire heritage of Gorski Kotar. The activities of eco-museum would enable a complete, high-quality and attractive presentation of the region's values and would thus become a part of its recognizable tourist offer, as well as founding the model for the survival and prosperity of the whole region.
