Summary/Abstract: Health care is an extremely important and at the same time very difficult element of the social policy of the state. Both in Poland and in many other countries, the issue of sources and ways of financing health care is an important element of effective state policy and at the same time one of the largest socio-economic problems. Organizational units of the health financing system in Poland are primarily health care institutions: the Ministry of Health and the National Health Fund. The source of funding for the Polish health care system is the state budget, health insurance (voluntary or compulsory) and patients’ own funds. In Poland, universal health insurance is compulsory.
