Summary/Abstract: The cooperation with Moscow has always given the EU many headaches. The democratization euphoria of the beginning of ‘90s evaporated faster than the West expected and put Europe in front of a difficult choice: to castigate Russia for deviation from democratic values or to encourage the country to ‘learn democracy’ by advantageous concessions. The present paper analyses the evolution of the EU-Russia relations from the dismissal of the Soviet Union to the end of Putin’s second presidential term.
