Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses two main directions of doctors' activities: purposeful-rational and communicative activities. It is proven that the overall activity of doctors cannot be based exclusively on natural, empirical sciences, in spite of the fact that many doctors find this field the safest. In therapeutic reality the purposeful-rational activity represents not more than a preliminary stage; for the complete treatment of a patient, the doctor needs to move from the level of establishing facts by "measurement" and "calculation" to the level of observation of the actual patient, which, however, involves a completely different and in principle new medical activity: communication.
