Summary/Abstract: Byzas/Byzes is traditionally known as the heros eponymos and oikistes of the city of Byzantion on the Bosphorus, the later Constantinople. That is why Emperor Constantine I the Great as founder of the city was compared to him as well. The tradition follows at least two typologically different lines as regards the mythological descent of Byzas and his activity.
