Summary/Abstract: To the east of the island of Cyprus, the names of the ancient buildings in the area known as the Oldtown of Famagusta, which is located in the sea side, can be determined according to the history records or the contents of the documents which contain our history. Most of the time, due the scarcity of the history books or inadequate records, the necessary information cannot be obtained or misleading information and wrong names and definitions are extracted and used. Known as the ancient city of Famagusta, also known as “Sur içi” (within walls) in Turkish by the local people or “Old town” in English, the church known as Azize Fotu (Ayia Fotu) or in English known as “Ayia Photou Underground Church” located 50 m. before on the left of “Yeni Kapı” (New Gate) and 30 m. on the north-west of “Türk Gücü Spor Klübü” (Türk Gücü Sports club) was the victim of such inaccuracies or naming, without good investigation and therefore its real name and purpose could not come to light. In the “Gazimağusa Suriçi” (Famagusta Old town) plan of the Mapping Office of TRNC Rehabilitation Department issued in 1995, contains information about this church and two Azize Fotu (Ayio Photou) Church are seen next to each other. Since the names of the two churches cannot be the same, the one on the north, where some parts are still underground should be “Aziz Dominik Kilisesi” (St. Dominic Church) and the ruins situated 5 m. to the south bearing the sign “Azize Fotu Kilisesi” (Ayia Fotu) should be Azize Fotu (Ayia Fotu – St. Photou) Church. This research has been done to draw attention to this historical error that has been recorded in official records.
