Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to provide a general overview of main issues related to contemporary migration processes. In the first section, the author introduces definitions and discusses methodological challenges related to migration studies. Next, the brief history of migration and modern migration trends are presented. Although the phenomenon of migration has been a constant in human history, academics identify some patterns which have been characterizing migration only since 1945, including its globalization, acceleration, differentiation and politicization. The last section covers three generations of migration theory, namely ‘push‑pull’ theories, the centre–periphery model and the theory of transnational social spaces.
