Summary/Abstract: Geographical terminology (including terms of lowland relief) is the most popular semantic group of vocabulary in the formation of toponyms. The article studies the toponymic stems of Lake Syamozero territory, that represent lowland relief (Alho-, Alango-,Kurzu-, Uitto-, Lyöžy-). It also deals with the problem of linguistic and ethno-cultural relations of Lake Syamozero territory at different times. For this purpose, the etymological origins of the terms are considered, including both original Baltic-Finnish lexemes and borrowings of different times. Areas and ethno-linguistic processes are also analyzed. All terms differ in their semantic shades and age, and their toponymic activity also varies. It has been demonstrated that this activity is related to the character of the use of the place described by the term. The topicality and novelty of the research is in the use of the areal-typological method of the toponymic material analysis for solving ethno-historical problems. It has been proved that Lake Syamozero territory was connected with Karelian Ladoga area, through which Finnish and early Russian borrowings penetrated. Data from the toponymic field research card catalogue of the Institute of Language, Literature and History (Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences), and Toponymic Archive of Finland served as the source for the research. Explanatory and etymological dictionaries of the Karelian and Finnish languages were also actively used.
