Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on theorizing of the archetype and its use in Orthodox church music. The parallel with Western theory is significant because it has developed a methodology and established appropriate terminology. The use of the term archetype is suitable for its broad range. It is widely used by Orthodox theologians owing to the numerous shades in the meaning – original, prime cause, and initial structure. The constant desire for standardization of musical structures gives us reason to call them archetypal. This enables the connection between technique and theological semantics, between the symbol and symbolized.Whatever changes historical time bring, they do not alter the essence of Orthodox music. Therefore, we speak not of radical changes, but of contemporary practice which can be considered as a positive tendency in archetype exploration.
