Summary/Abstract: Middle Class, Modernization and Transition. This paper presents the growth of the middle class in Romania after the social change in 1989. It starts with a paragraph about social structure and social mobility in the modern society, in comparison with the premodern one, and shows the increasing share and the role of the middle class in developed postmodern societies. In the second part, it describes the initial conditions for the development of the middle class in Romania, by examining the social structure of the country in the inter-war period and the communist regime, which followed the Second World War. The third part deals with the development of the new middle class, both in the light of some studies based on self-report, and the analysis of objective data about income, socio-occupational structure, educational level, etc. In the final part, the author estimates the probably proportions of the middle class in today’s Romania in socio-professional repartition, and emphasizes the differences between its structure and the Western social model.
