Summary/Abstract: Hostility and violence are sometimes regarded as innate, and at other times as acquired, human traits. While this may be true of person-to-person interaction, individuals and groups are often maneuvered through stories of hate into committing acts of aggression against invented enemies on behalf of others. Their latent hard feelings may be “switched on” and upheld for a long time even in the physical absence of the enemy. For better understanding, some examples are provided of political manipulation that takes advantage of this mechanism to pursue objectives that serve group interests, to the detriment of the general population, as well as a possible solution.
