Summary/Abstract: This review paper aims to serve as a theoretical basis for further Hungarian researches in the field of development - migration interactions, or, to be more precise, effects of various development programmes on rural emigration. Within the theoretical context of internal migration, the paper shed light on the fact that the negative relationship between development and rural emigration is far less evident than it is assumed by political concerns. To address this issue, in the first part of the paper, core theoretical concepts as well as empirical research topics are presented, which is followed by summarising results of international researchers within the topic of development-migration interactions in a methodological-disciplinary division. As a result, the paper concludes that effects of socio-economic development programmes on „population preserving capacity” of a given rural area, based on theories and previous investigations are not or not always in align with what is often supposed by policies.
