Summary/Abstract: The analysis of the saving habits of Yugoslav population reveals regional and ethnic variations. Savings accounts in banking institutions show that Slovenes lead in saving, followed closely by Macedonians. Starting from the assumption that the satisfaction of needs, saving, and spending behavior is determined by cultural context or, more precisely, by the process of civilization, the author tries to explain these variations in saving habits by ethnological argumentation. Using scarce published sources, she attempts to distinguish the »economic philosophy« of agricultural and pastoral peoples, as well as historically determined regional and ethnic patterns of consumer and savings behavior.
