Summary/Abstract: Various food items play an important role among numerous natural remedies used by people in Istria. Healing qualities are ascribed to certain kinds of cereal, vegetables, meat and dairy products, as well as to some fruits and products derived from it: brandy, wine, vinegar and juices. In his contribution, the author describes circumstances when specific food is used as medicine: during pregnancy and after delivery to ensure the health of mother and child; and at different dates during a calendar year to ensure the prosperity of the household. But food items have been used more frequently in the treatment of illness than in prevention. Besides domestic products, peasants used for healing various herbs and fruits of the forest. In Istria, two universal and in the past most frequently applied remedies were olive oil and garlic.
