Summary/Abstract: Matija Valjavec can be considered one of the most important collectors of literary folklore in Slovenia and kaikavian Croatia. The rules of fieldwork which he followed could withstand, to a large extent, even contemporary professional critique. The purpose of this article is to present systematically Matija Valjavec's contribution to Slovenian and Croatian literary folkloristics. We should become aware of a task we still have in relation to Valjavec: to gather the folklore material which he published in various journals and other publications, and to republish it in a single volume in order to make his work more easily accessible to professionals, as well as to wider readership.
