Summary/Abstract: The period since 1994 is one of the most interesting periods to analyze in Romania’s history. The period is all the more interesting from the point of view of national security. This study is intended to analyze Romania’s national security during the period since 1994. The focus is on the evolution of the Romanian national security strategy and the manner in which it transformed as an integral part of the processes of realignment and transition to democracy. The study draws attention to the stadial shift from a traditional geostrategic thinking on national security – the territorial national defense that dominated the Cold War period – to a more liberal and pluralist concept of security inspired by the realignment to the West. I argue that the process of realignment was a slow process, not a sudden one, ab initio one as it has come to be generally understood. The realignment process started in late 1993 and officially materialized in early 1994, with the signing of the PfP. From this point on, Romania’s efforts to join NATO and the EU were complementary in the process of shifting from a traditional geostrategic outlook towards a more liberal, pluralist outlook on security based on interdependence and increased integration and interoperability.
