Summary/Abstract: The article compares different definitions of the basic concept of ‘sadness’ and its Bulgarian counterpart ‘тъга’ provided by bilingual and monolingual dictionaries with some instances of their use in context. Although the concept of sadness is close in meaning to ‘тъга’ and ‘печал’ there is no complete overlap in meaning between the three concepts mentioned above. Sadness covers a wider range of states: from those of being unhappy to those caused by a severe loss, while ‘тъга’ is closer in meaning to the English ‘melancholy’.
