Summary/Abstract: A common problem with research into farm-steads is that, at present, there is no universally-accepted definition of a farmstead. Another problem specific to the Hungarian context is that no exact data are available for the number of farmsteads on the Great Hungarian Plain in recent decades. Recognizing this problem, a farmstead survey targeting the delineation ofthe Farmstead Development Programme was carried out in 2016. The authors of the study attempted to collect the data and databases currently available about farmsteads and pe-ripheral residential areas and present a background to the survey carried out in 2016. The results of the survey allow to identify newtrends, such as farmsteads becoming territorially more fragmented and the transformation of farms away from their traditional functions.
