Summary/Abstract: Describing ideological profile of the New Right as a political movement from its birth in 1955 until 1968. focus of the essay is relation between this movement and both communism and Soviet Union. Although New Right relayed on the tradition of American libertarianism like in the case with Old Right as well, relations toward foreign and domestic challenges proved to be defining factor for the New Right in the history of modern American conservatism. Essay is also dealing with political theory of Frank S. Mayer as well as with intellectual infl uences of William F. Buckley, the most famous icon of the New Right. Authors of this movement questioned prevailing doctrine of containment in official foreign policy and that was shown through the work of James Burnham, one of the editors of National Review, intellectual pillar of the movement. The main conclusion of this essay is that New Right did not manage to sustain fusionist balance between three founding political traditions – libertarianism, traditionalism and anti-communism. This misbalance was introduction to the new stage in the development of the American conservatism after 1968.
